When author Faith Gardner grew frustrated with the slowly grinding gears of traditional publishing and wanted to spread her wings a bit, she took matters into her own hands.
In the first episode of the Comebacks, Pivots, and Reinventions series, I talk to Faith about her journey from traditional to indie publishing (and also back again), the ways she changed her writing process to fit a new paradigm, and how the traditional vs. indie debate is not necessarily and either/or discussion.
We also talked about how some things about writing don’t change regardless of how you publish: self-doubt, isolation, and trouble putting boundaries around work, for example!
I tore through Amen Maxine and am ready for the next book, and so admire how Faith is carving out a space for herself in the indie world while keeping her foot in traditional publishing, too. This is the kind of flexibility all writers need to keep in mind as the 21st century continues to…uhhh…surprise us?
